Heaviness and Gratitude

My parents, both in their early 80's, are showing their frailty ever faster. A few phone calls with my father talking about his long-dead brother alerted me, and my brother and sister and I are now finding more chinks in their mental armor. Email and conference calling are a blessing that allows for quick communication, but they upset the digestion of what's unfolding. I feel heavy with sadness after each revelation of my parents' deficits. But I feel grateful for such solid, caring siblings, for my wise, loving, and generous wife, and for a community that offers such rich support.

Last Hurrah - Geek Salad farewell meeting on Feb 15 at Kaldi's 7-8 AM

We cancelled two weeks ago because of the blizzard.
We'll meet this Tuesday Feb 15, if the Lord's willin' and the creek don't rise.

Enjoy your last serving of Geek Salad.

And, as a reminder from the email two weeks ago:

New chapter

I have other time demands in my life now, and it is time to let go of some things, even things that are still very appealing. Geek Salad is one of them.

I hope you have also been inspired, delighted, or surprised by your experience.

One more thing

So, for the last meeting of Geek Salad, I invite you to join us to celebrate and reflect.

Geek Salad isn't Crazy or Reckless - We won't meet tomorrow AM. Stay tuned for a deferred last hurrah.

Not Crazy!

And I have perfectly good weather apps warning of the impending blizzard.
University is closed tomorrow.
So is Geek Salad.

Stay tuned for the date of the deferred last hurrah.

End of an Era - Geek Salad Final Meeting on Feb 1 at 7-8 AM at Kaldi's

It’s been a wonderful ride.

Geek Salad started meeting about 3 ½ years ago as a salon about usability and innovation. The topic of conversation really depended on who showed up and what was on their hearts and minds.  I learned a lot, got great creative suggestions when I needed them, got reality checks from wild ideas, and was inspired by the friends and colleagues that dropped in. I developed the discipline of a bi-weekly invitation with a little thought, and it became an automatic way to blog.

I also challenge you to ask yourself: What kind of people have I been dismissing as hopelessly different or wrong-headed?

Maybe now is the season to make a change.

I was inspired by this TED Talk.

Elizabeth Lesser: Take "the Other" to lunch

There's an angry divisive tension in the air that threatens to make modern politics impossible. Elizabeth Lesser explores the two sides of human nature within us (call them "the mystic" and "the warrior”) that can be harnessed to elevate the way we treat each other. She shares a simple way to begin real dialogue -- by going to lunch with someone who doesn't agree with you, and asking them three questions to find out what's really in their hearts.

Cheers.

And if I don’t see you Tuesday, thanks for being a part of this journey.

IDEO Re-imagines the ATM - Geek Salad won't meet this Tue Dec 21

There are a few places where usability has made significant improvements in the past few years, but where consistency and thoughtfulness are still lacking.

The gasoline pump, the grocery store checkout, and the ATM machine still have a ways to go before they will be delightful to use. Don't get me started about microwave oven controls!

IDEO is re-imagining the ATM.
This video link is worth a watch (3:42 min).

Here are a couple of screenshots.

Don't get soap in your eyes - Geek Salad will not meet this Tuesday Dec 7

Why aren't all shampoo and conditioner bottles labelled like this, for my presbyopic eyes?

The tall orange bottles are so easy to read without your glasses.

The second bottles are more typical.
Most bottles are labelled with lush typography and are otherwise unreadable to 40+ year old eyes, without their reading glasses, in the shower trying to figure out which bottle to use first.
It's a usability issue seldom addressed.
I bet all the graphic designers are twenty-somethings.

I'm in the throes of CPOE (computerized physician order entry) conversion these two weeks, and I'll need the extra waking hour to cope with that project.
It's gratifying to feel needed and wanted, I suppose.

So, sleep late, or linger over your morning coffee all by yourself.
See you in two weeks, a few days before Christmas.

Shop Class as Soulcraft - Geek Salad hosts Brian Page, Locksmith, Tue Nov 23 at 7 AM

I've learned a lot from my friend, Brian Page.
He's officially retired, and a man of leisure who doesn't mind coming in at 7 AM to meet a group of creative, curious people like you.

He and I have talked about the declining value our culture expresses for those who work with their hands: the craftsman, or the plumber who can feel behind a wall with his hand through a hole in the wallboard and visualize and problem solve the flow of your life's fluids, or the seamstress who skillfully produces clothing that fits exquisitely.

There's a book we encountered and recommend:
Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work
by Matthew Crawford.

Pastedgraphic-6

Come join the conversation with Brian as we talk about the value of work with the hands.
And maybe about judging the quality of locks: pay me now or pay me later.
Or maybe about the evolving technology of locks.

He knows how to make your creaky locks sing.
